The Hardy Room
The House of Wessex was effectively the first great Royal House in this country since Athelstan was of the House of Wessex. Wessex included what is now Dorset, Devon, Wiltshire, Somerset, Hampshire and much of Berkshire.
Hardy himself was in love with the countryside, like Wordsworth, one of his heroes. He was highly critical of Victorian society and the decline he saw in rural life. Thanks in part to Hardy's romanticisation of the way of life around here, much of Hardy's Wessex is still in evidence today, and it is this unspoiled beauty that keeps people coming back to this area year after year.
The Hardy Room is our large family room, with two double beds and two bunk beds.
The Somers Suite
The story of how he founded the colony of the Somers Isle (later Bermuda) is a real classic in the annals of true-life high adventure. After three days battling a storm, their newly-built ship, the Sea Venture had let in so much water the ship was foundering. Spying land in the nick of time, Somers deliberately sailed the beleaguered vessel into the reefs around the island. Miraculously, all 150 crew and passengers and even the ship's dog were able to get safely ashore.
Their ordeal was far from over since the survivors then faced ten months marooned in this tropical paradise. Again, under the leadership of our George, they rallied, and even built a church and some houses, surviving on food from the island and fish they had to catch themselves.
This settlement was the start of the Bermuda colony.
The Somers room has a super king-size bed, which can also be set as two singles.
The French Lieutenant's Suite
John Fowles chose to settle in Lyme Regis after achieving international fame and recognition with his book The Magus. It was The French Lieutenant's Woman that secured his reputation amongst the literary giants who have called Dorset home at one time or another, and so this is the name we have chosen for this room. It has a better ring to it than "The Magus' Room" too!
The third part of our series and the remaining four rooms of the Dower House Hotel will be coming next...
