The famous Westminster lion, and numerous private pieces in Buckingham Palace are of Coade Stone. She was an avid supporter of women's rights, and left healthy sums of money to several female friends with express instructions that their husbands were not to gain control of a penny of it!
Clearly a smart lady, and way ahead of her time, we are proud to name one of our most popular rooms in her honour.
The Coade Room is one of our superior rooms, with a flat-screen television, and even a nespresso machine!
His work identifying the group of birds that came to be known as 'Darwin's Finches' is perhaps his most famous contribution to world knowledge. However, there are also many species of bird and several lizards and a mouse that are all named after him. He made several exploratory expeditions to Australia and Scandinavia to catalogue the wildlife there, and published books detailing what he found.
An expert taxidermist, and sketcher, he preserved thousands of specimens himself, and produced sketches that would go on to form the basis of detailed illustrations for his books. He has been honoured by a stamp issued by the Australian government for his work there.
The Gould Room, one of our double rooms, is modest but extremely well-appointed! It's a double room with westerly views across the countryside to the sea.
The Austen Suite is one of our 'Superior' rooms, with a gigantic four-poster bed and extensive westerly views to the sea.
'A very strange stranger it must be, who does not see charms in the immediate environs of Lyme, to make him wish to know it better.'
We couldn't agree more! And our beautifully appointed, family-run hotel is just the place to stay whilst you learn more about this wonderful area.
