One of the things visitors often tell us when they visit The Dower House is how lucky we are to live in such a lovely part of the country. Our hotel is uniquely located with the beautiful rolling hills of East Devon behind us and the spectacular Jurassic Coast in front. Take a short drive into Seaton or Lyme Regis where you can pick up the wonderful South West Coast Path and enjoy the coast for either a short walk along the seafront or a more challenging section of the Coast Path like the Seaton to Lyme Regis Undercliff.
If you are staying with us, we are always delighted to share ideas for local walks with you. There are some good options for short and medium length walks that start and finish at the hotel. Another idea is to walk through the pretty country lanes into Axmouth or Seaton head back on the bus.
If you are happy to drive a short way, then the choices are endless. There are circular pub walks for Sunday lunch, walks with great views that will leave you breathless in more ways than one and walks to blow the cobwebs away along the beach.
Maybe you prefer a short stroll with a lovely coffee shop at the end, taking time to enjoy a proper Devon cream tea or fish and chips on the beach. Whatever suits you, the team at The Dower House can point you in the right direction.
We know that many of our guests can’t think of a holiday without their dogs and they will enjoy a good walk as well. In East Devon there is a new requirement for all dogs to be kept on a lead on roads and pavements, however there are also lots of open spaces, footpaths and bridle ways where dogs can be let off the lead.
When you are staying with us you can ask us for copies of our Dower House Hotel Walks with instructions that we have had printed.
Here’s a quick description of some of the walks that we recommend for you.
CIRCULAR WALK – 4 MILES
2 hours – country lanes and footpaths
This route takes in quiet country lanes near the hotel. If you are a dog walker there is an optional section of ‘green lane’ where your four-legged companion can enjoy some time off the lead.
There is also a section of footpaths across two fields so be prepared for that as well. Although not far in distance this is quite a challenging walk as there are a lot of up and down hills and the second footpath section is quite steep.
Similar to the previous option, this walk is around the country lanes of our local village of Combpyne. It does involve some up and down hills. The return is along a green lane which can get quite muddy in parts.
WALK INTO SEATON
Another option is to walk through the lanes into Seaton or Axmouth. It’s 3 miles on pretty country lanes and short section of the South West Coast Path. Take some time to explore Seaton or watch the birds along the estuary. Then you can take the bus back to Rousdon to avoid the steep climb back! We are happy to provide a map with a walking route as well if you enjoy a challenge.
We’re perfectly located for exploring on foot and there are a host of opportunities for walkers in the area. Stroll out from Dower House and you’ll find yourself in the pretty village of Rousdon with lovely country lanes and several super walks.
THE SOUTH WEST COAST PATH www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk Venture out to Lyme Regis and you can head out on one of the most famous walking routes in the country, From Lyme you can hike out towards Golden Cap with its fantastic views, or walk a little further and you’ll rive at West Bay with its superb seafront and great beach.
East Devon Way: Enjoy a walk through the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty- impressive at any time of year www.eastdevonaonb.org.uk.
